What is Therapy?

Is it right for me?

Many people struggle with what the idea of therapy is. When considering if you need therapy, we often ask ourselves these questions:

  • Is it only for “crazy people?”
  • Is it for kids that are “out of Control?”.
  • Does therapy cause Divorce?”
  • Will being in therapy make me look bad to my friends and family?”
  • Or is it simply a place to talk about my struggles with navigating the unpredictable world we live in?

Therapy can be many things depending on what we are seeking. Life sometimes gets overwhelming, and this leads to feeling alone and lost. Maybe we’ve talked about our struggles with our friends, coworkers, and family only to feel that we’ve burdened them, and the advice they offered wasn’t helpful. Although our friends, coworkers, and family care about our well being, they may lack the ability to view your issues from an unbiased position which leads to providing us with opinions from their life perspective. Well, this may not really be what we need. This is where therapy can be helpful.

We all struggle from time to time with finding balance in our lives and working with a therapist on specific measurable, achievable, realistic goals within a time frame to accomplish these goals can be a rewarding journey. Therapy is not about “fixing you” because you are not broken! Therapy does not give you advice. Therapy is about exploring what is causing discomfort in your life, Identifying the hidden inner barriers to self-actualization, and to learning ways to overcome these in a safe confidential space.
